Everything you need to know about trekking to K2 Base Camp via the Baltoro Glacier — route, difficulty, permits, best time, costs, what to expect, and how to prepare.
The trek to K2 Base Camp via the Baltoro Glacier is widely regarded as one of the greatest trekking journeys on Earth. The route passes beneath more 8,000-metre peaks than any other trek in the world, culminating at the foot of K2 (8,611m) — the second highest and by most accounts the most technically demanding mountain on the planet. This is not a walk for beginners, but for those who are properly prepared, it delivers an experience that redefines the meaning of mountain scenery.
The standard K2 Base Camp trek begins in Skardu, the nearest city with an airport. From Skardu, a full day’s jeep drive leads to Askole (3,015m) — the last inhabited village before the glacier. The trek then follows the Braldu River valley before joining the Baltoro Glacier, which it follows for approximately 60km to Concordia (4,690m). From Concordia, K2 Base Camp (5,000m) is one day further. The full round trip from Askole takes between 14 and 20 days depending on acclimatization days, side trips, and weather.
The Baltoro Glacier is a world of superlatives. The route passes beneath Trango Towers, Cathedral Spires, Masherbrum (7,821m), Gasherbrum IV (7,932m), and Broad Peak (8,051m). At Concordia, on a clear morning, trekkers stand at the confluence of four 8,000-metre peaks — K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II — a panorama that has moved even the most experienced mountaineers.
The K2 Base Camp trek is rated as strenuous to very demanding. The terrain involves long days on lateral moraine and glacier, significant altitude gain, exposure to altitude sickness, and unpredictable mountain weather. No technical climbing is required on the standard route, but physical fitness must be excellent. Daily hiking distances typically range from 8 to 16km at altitudes between 3,000m and 5,000m. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended.
The trekking window is June to September, with July and August generally offering the most stable weather. June can still have cold nights and some snow on the upper glacier. September offers clearer skies and fewer trekkers but the weather window is shorter. The route is completely inaccessible from October to May.
The K2 Base Camp trek requires a trekking permit, a No Objection Certificate (NOC), and registration with the Pakistan Alpine Club. These must be arranged before your departure and are best handled through a registered tour operator. A licensed guide is mandatory — independent trekking without a registered guide and porter team is not permitted on the Baltoro Glacier. Heritage Hike handles all permit applications, guide appointments, and logistics as part of our K2 Base Camp packages.
The trek is fully camping-based beyond Askole — there are no guesthouses on the Baltoro Glacier. All camping equipment is provided by your expedition operator. Porters carry the bulk of the gear. Food is cooked fresh at camp each day. Weather on the glacier is unpredictable — clear blue skies can give way to violent storms within hours. Always follow your guide’s advice on weather-related decisions.
Training for K2 Base Camp should begin at least three to four months before your departure. Focus on cardiovascular endurance through long-distance hiking, running, or cycling. Build up with progressively longer hikes carrying a loaded pack. Incorporate hill and stair training to prepare your legs for sustained ascent and descent. Consider completing a shorter high-altitude trek before attempting K2 Base Camp.
Heritage Hike operates fully supported K2 Base Camp expeditions with experienced local guides, full camping equipment, all permit and logistics management, and small group sizes for flexibility in pacing and acclimatization. Our guides are from Baltistan and have decades of experience on the Baltoro Glacier. Trekking this route with a team who knows every camp, every weather pattern, and every cultural nuance is not just safer — it is profoundly richer. Get in touch to discuss available departure dates.
