Batura Glacier and Meadows Gojal Hunza
The Batura Glacier is one of the longest and most spectacular glaciers outside the polar regions, stretching over 57km along the northern slopes of the Batura Muztagh in Upper Hunza.
Destination Overview
Stretching over 57 kilometers, Batura Glacier is one of the longest and most accessible glaciers outside the polar regions. Located in Upper Hunza, just beyond the picturesque village of Passu, this massive river of ice flows beneath the towering peaks of the Batura Muztagh in the Karakoram Mountains.
What makes Batura unique is its dramatic contrast: rugged ice and moraine landscapes sit alongside lush alpine meadows, wildflowers, and traditional Wakhi shepherd settlements. Unlike many high-altitude treks in Gilgit-Baltistan, the Batura route offers a rare combination of cultural immersion and high-mountain wilderness without extreme technical difficulty.
Trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of 7,000-meter giants including Batura Sar and Shispare, while walking through peaceful summer pastures used by local communities for centuries.
With moderate difficulty, gradual elevation gain, and breathtaking scenery, Batura Glacier Trek is ideal for adventure travelers seeking an authentic Karakoram experience away from the crowds of more commercial routes.

How to Reach
Reaching Batura Glacier is a scenic journey through northern Pakistan. International travelers first arrive at Islamabad International Airport, the country’s main gateway. From Islamabad, you can either take a short domestic flight to Gilgit (approximately 1 hour, weather permitting) or travel by road along the legendary Karakoram Highway, a 14–16 hour drive offering dramatic mountain and river views. From Gilgit, it’s a further 3–4 hour drive north to the village of Passu, which serves as the starting point of the trek. Essential Information
Essential Info
Batura Glacier lies in the remote upper reaches of Hunza Valley, in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The journey begins from the charming village of Passu, situated along the legendary Karakoram Highway. From here, trekkers enter a vast alpine valley where towering rock walls, glacial rivers, and snow-capped peaks dominate the landscape.
The glacier stretches between 2,540 meters and nearly 4,700 meters in elevation, while most trekking routes reach a comfortable high point of around 4,200 meters at Patundas. The gradual ascent makes it a suitable high-altitude trek for moderately fit travelers without requiring technical climbing skills. However, good physical preparation is important due to long walking days and uneven moraine terrain.
The best time to visit is between June and September, when the snow has receded, alpine meadows are lush, and Wakhi shepherd families move into their traditional summer settlements. During this season, daytime temperatures are pleasant, though nights at higher camps can drop close to freezing.
Accommodation combines comfortable local guesthouses in Passu with fully serviced camping during the trek. A professional guide, cook, and support team are highly recommended to ensure safety and smooth logistics. Mobile connectivity is available in Passu, but once inside the valley, trekkers should expect complete digital disconnection—offering a rare opportunity to experience untouched mountain wilderness.
While no special trekking permit is generally required for this region, travelers must carry passport copies for security checkposts. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking is strongly advised.
Batura Glacier offers not just a physical journey through one of the Karakoram’s most impressive glacial systems, but also a cultural encounter with the traditional Wakhi communities who have lived in harmony with this landscape for generations.
