Borith Lake and Ghulkin Glacier
A hidden glacial lake set among surreal sand dunes, with views of the Ghulkin Glacier — one of Northern Pakistan's most unusual and photogenic landscapes.
Destination Overview
Borith Lake is one of upper Hunza’s quieter gems, rewarding travellers who venture just beyond the most famous viewpoints. North of Passu and close to Ghulkin village on the Karakoram Highway, this calm, reed-fringed glacial lake sits beneath the rugged ridgelines of Gojal with the Ghulkin Glacier looming nearby.
The approach to Borith is unlike most walks in the Karakoram. Instead of steep climbs, the trail meanders gently across a stretch of pale sand dunes created by glacial outwash. The combination of undulating dunes, a nearby glacier, jagged rock peaks and a still, high-altitude lake feels almost surreal.
On calm mornings the lake becomes a perfect mirror, and in spring and summer it attracts a variety of birdlife. The return walk from Ghulkin village typically takes 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace, making it an accessible half-day outing that pairs naturally with Passu Glacier and Attabad Lake as part of a full day in upper Hunza.

Best Time to Visit
Summer (May–September)
Borith Lake is at or near full water level, with pleasant temperatures and wildflowers around the shore. This is the best overall window for walking the dunes and enjoying clear reflections on the lake.
Autumn (October)
Crisp, clear air and softer light make October excellent for photography. Visitor numbers drop and the atmosphere becomes even quieter, though temperatures are cooler, especially mornings and evenings.
Overall Best Time
May to October is ideal. The trail is generally accessible from spring onwards, but the lake can be partially frozen or low in early spring, and conditions become cold and occasionally snowy from November through early spring.
How to Reach
By Road
Ghulkin village lies on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) roughly 20 km north of Gulmit and about 15 km north of Attabad Lake. From Karimabad in central Hunza, the drive to Ghulkin typically takes 1.5–2 hours by private car or hired jeep. Public transport jeeps and minibuses running along the KKH towards Sost can drop you at the Ghulkin junction, from where you can walk or arrange a local ride up to the village.
On Foot
From Ghulkin village, the trail to Borith Lake is mostly flat with gentle undulations. It crosses the glacial outwash plain and sand dunes before reaching the lake shore. The walk is approximately 5–6 km return and usually takes 1.5–2 hours each way at a relaxed pace, depending on stops for photos and views of the Ghulkin Glacier.

The iconic jagged peaks above Passu village, easily visible from the Karakoram Highway and best appreciated from roadside viewpoints or short walks along the Hunza River.
Passu Glacier (10km away)
A dramatic glacier descending towards the valley floor near Passu, accessible via a short hike from the village and often combined with Borith Lake in a single day.

Khunjerab Pass (80km away)
The high border pass between Pakistan and China at over 4,600m, reached by continuing north on the Karakoram Highway through upper Gojal.
Shimshal Valley (Nearby junction on KKH away)
A remote, high-altitude valley accessed via a side road off the Karakoram Highway not far from Ghulkin, known for serious trekking and traditional Wakhi villages.
Essential Information
Facilities and Services
There are no formal facilities at Borith Lake itself—no shops, restaurants or toilets on the trail. Ghulkin village has a small guesthouse and basic village shops, but you should bring sufficient water and snacks for the walk. Mobile phone signal is limited or patchy once you leave the village and approach the lake.
No special trekking permit is required to visit Borith Lake or the Ghulkin Glacier viewpoint. The route follows local paths used by villagers and is considered a low-commitment day walk. Respect local property and cultivated fields when passing through Ghulkin and stay on established paths across the dunes.
Difficulty and Safety
The trail is generally easy and mostly flat, suitable for most fitness levels, including families. The main challenges are sun exposure, loose sand in the dune sections and the altitude, which is higher than central Hunza but still manageable for most visitors. Wear sturdy footwear, carry enough water, and avoid venturing onto the glacier itself without proper equipment and experience.
Borith Lake fits naturally into an upper Hunza itinerary. With an early start from Karimabad or Gulmit, you can visit Borith Lake and the dunes, then continue to Passu Glacier viewpoints and Attabad Lake in a single, full day. Many travellers base themselves in Gulmit, Passu or Ghulkin to explore these spots at a slower pace.
Travel Tips
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the walk from Ghulkin village to Borith Lake at a relaxed pace.
A guide is not strictly necessary, but hiring a local guide from Ghulkin can enrich the experience with local knowledge and route finding.
Photographers should aim to reach the sand dune section in the morning when light and shadows are most dramatic.
Combine Borith Lake with Attabad Lake and the Passu Cones for a full upper Hunza day trip from Karimabad.
Carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are no shops or facilities on the trail or at the lake.
Wear sun protection and a hat—there is little shade along the dunes and lakeshore.
Check weather conditions before setting out, as strong winds can make the dunes less pleasant to cross.
