K2 Base Camp
The ultimate trekking objective in Pakistan — a demanding multi-day journey through the Karakoram to the base of the world's second-highest mountain.
Destination Overview
K2 Base Camp is the most ambitious trekking destination in Pakistan — and by many measures, one of the most awe-inspiring wilderness journeys on earth. The standard route from Skardu via Askole, up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and onwards to the base of the world’s second-highest mountain at 5,100 metres, is an 18–22 day undertaking that demands physical fitness, psychological resilience, and proper preparation.
The trek passes through a concentration of high peaks unmatched anywhere on the planet. From Concordia — the junction of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers — you stand surrounded by four of the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II. The Trango Towers, rising as sheer vertical walls above the glacier, are considered among the greatest rock climbing challenges in the world.
K2 itself — at 8,611 metres, 237 metres shorter than Everest but widely considered the harder and more dangerous mountain — presents its full southern face from Base Camp. In good weather, it is a sight that changes people. The scale, the isolation, and the silence of the Karakoram at that altitude are unlike anything else.
This trek is not for everyone, and it should not be attempted without proper planning. A licensed guide is legally required, a registered porter team is essential for the multi-day approach, and trekking permits must be arranged in advance through a registered Pakistani tour operator. Heritage Hike arranges fully supported K2 Base Camp treks with experienced high-mountain guides.

Best Time to Visit
Summer (June–August)
The K2 Base Camp trek is only realistically possible in summer. July is generally the most stable month on the Baltoro, with longer days and more predictable weather, while June can be more unsettled but sees fewer trekkers.
Overall best time: Late June to early August offers the best combination of weather stability, glacier conditions, and daylight for this high-altitude expedition.
How to Reach
To Skardu
Fly from Islamabad to Skardu (around 35 minutes) or drive via the Karakoram Highway and Indus Valley road (14–16 hours). Skardu is the primary logistics base for K2 Base Camp treks.
Skardu to Askole
From Skardu, a full day’s jeep drive (6–8 hours) on rough mountain roads leads to Askole — the last permanent village before the wilderness of the Baltoro.
Askole to K2 Base Camp
From Askole, the standard approach follows the Baltoro Glacier, taking approximately 8–10 days of trekking and covering roughly 110 km one way to reach K2 Base Camp via Concordia.
Nearby Attractions
Concordia (Approx. 6–8 hours trek from K2 Base Camp away)
The legendary junction of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers, surrounded by K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum peaks — often called the throne room of the mountain gods.
Trango Towers (En route on the Baltoro Glacier away)
A dramatic group of granite spires rising sheer above the Baltoro, considered among the greatest and most difficult big-wall rock climbing objectives in the world.
Gasherbrum Base Camp (1–2 days trek from Concordia away)
An extension from Concordia leading to the base camps of Gasherbrum I and II, offering close-up views of these 8,000m giants.
Hushe Valley (Alternative approach route, multi-day trek/drive from Skardu away)
A remote, scenic valley that provides an alternative approach to the Baltoro region and links with high passes used on some extended K2 Base Camp itineraries.
Skardu City (Trek start/end hub away)
The main gateway town for Karakoram expeditions, serving as the logistics base for K2 Base Camp with hotels, gear shops, and tour operators.
Essential Information
A trekking permit is mandatory for K2 Base Camp and must be processed through a registered Pakistani tour operator. A licensed guide is legally required, and solo trekking without a guide is not permitted. Porter rates are regulated by the government; confirm that your operator follows official wage and load limits.
Duration and Difficulty
The standard K2 Base Camp itinerary from Skardu takes around 18–22 days, including travel, trekking, and acclimatisation days. This is a strenuous, high-altitude glacier trek requiring excellent physical fitness, previous trekking experience at altitude, and the ability to camp in cold, remote conditions.
Altitude and Acclimatisation
K2 Base Camp lies at roughly 5,100m, with Concordia just below 4,700m. Altitude sickness is a serious risk, especially above Paiju and on the upper Baltoro. Itineraries should build in acclimatisation days, gradual height gain, and conservative daily stages. Anyone showing signs of acute mountain sickness must descend immediately.
Safety and Insurance
Helicopter rescue is available from the Baltoro region to Skardu but is extremely expensive. Comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation is essential. Weather, rockfall, crevasses, and remoteness all add to the objective risk; choose an experienced operator with strong safety protocols.
Equipment and Camping
The K2 Base Camp trek is fully camping-based. You will need a four-season sleeping bag, insulated sleeping mat, layered high-altitude clothing, waterproofs, sturdy trekking boots, and glacier-appropriate footwear (for rough ice and moraine). Operators typically provide group camping gear, kitchen tents, and mess tents, while porters carry the bulk of expedition loads.
Group Size and Support
Most K2 Base Camp expeditions run with group sizes of around 8–14 trekkers, supported by a licensed guide, assistant guides, cooks, and a registered team of high-altitude porters. This support structure is essential for carrying food, fuel, and camping equipment over the multi-day approach on the Baltoro Glacier.

This is not a trek for beginners — previous high-altitude trekking experience is essential.
