Shigar Fort
A magnificently restored 17th-century Balti royal palace in the lush Shigar Valley, now operating as a heritage hotel with gardens, museum rooms, and dramatic mountain scenery.
Destination Overview
Shigar Fort is one of Northern Pakistan’s most remarkable heritage restorations and an unforgettable place to stay. Dating back to the 17th century, it served as the royal palace of the Raja of Shigar, a Balti kingdom with its own distinct culture, architecture, and traditions.
By the late 20th century the fort had fallen into serious disrepair, until the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), in partnership with the Government of Pakistan, undertook a meticulous restoration in the early 2000s. Today, the complex functions as a small heritage boutique hotel managed by Serena Hotels, with beautifully restored guest rooms, a garden restaurant, and museum spaces that showcase Balti royal history and craftsmanship.
The setting is extraordinary. The fort stands in the narrow, fertile Shigar Valley, framed by sheer granite cliffs that glow amber and gold in the evening light. Inside the walls, rose gardens, mulberry trees, and apricot orchards create an oasis-like atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the stark, high-mountain surroundings.
Day visitors can explore the grounds and museum rooms for an entrance fee, but spending a night here is especially memorable: dinner in the garden, the sound of the Shigar River in the distance, and a sense of living inside centuries of mountain history.
