Rakaposhi Base Camp
An accessible overnight trek leading to the base of one of the Karakoram's most beautiful peaks — Rakaposhi (7,788m), the jewel of the Hunza skyline.
Destination Overview
Rakaposhi — standing at 7,788 metres — is one of the most visually striking peaks in all of Pakistan. Its elegant pyramid shape is visible for hundreds of kilometres along the Karakoram Highway, dominating the skyline between Gilgit and Hunza.
The trek to its base camp is one of the most rewarding accessible treks in the region: a moderate two-day route that brings you to the foot of the mountain’s southwestern glacier face with genuinely staggering views.
The trek begins at Minapin village on the KKH, climbing through terraced agricultural fields and walnut groves before ascending into open terrain. The clear, well-used trail takes around 5–6 hours of hiking to reach base camp — a wide glacier moraine at approximately 3,500 metres, with Rakaposhi filling the entire northern horizon.
The approach is beautiful and varied, the altitude gain is manageable for a fit traveller with proper acclimatisation, and the payoff at base camp is one of the most dramatic mountain viewpoints in northern Pakistan. Compared to Fairy Meadows, Rakaposhi Base Camp receives fewer visitors and feels more remote and wild.

Essential Information
Porters and Equipment
Porters from Minapin village typically charge PKR 2,500–4,000 per day, depending on load and season. Hiring a porter is highly recommended if you are carrying full overnight camping gear.
Basic camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, stoves) can be rented in Gilgit and Karimabad (Hunza). There are no facilities at base camp, so you must carry all food, fuel, and shelter with you.
Accommodation
A simple guesthouse in Minapin can be used for the night before starting the trek, allowing you to rest and organise porters.
At Rakaposhi Base Camp, accommodation is camping only. Choose flat spots on the moraine away from the glacier edge and secure your tent well against wind.
Permits and Regulations
Currently, no special trekking permit is required for Rakaposhi Base Camp. However, regulations in Gilgit-Baltistan can change, so confirm the latest requirements locally in Gilgit or Hunza before setting out.
Carry your CNIC or passport and register with local authorities or guesthouse logs if requested.
Water, Safety, and Acclimatisation
There are no fully reliable water sources on the upper trail to base camp. Carry enough water from Minapin or lower springs, and treat any natural sources you use.
Spend at least one night in Gilgit or Hunza to acclimatise before attempting the trek, especially if arriving from low altitude. The trail can be slippery after rain, and sections near the moraine require careful footing.
Trekking poles, sturdy boots, sun protection, and warm layers for cold nights at 3,500m are essential.
Travel Tips
Begin the trek from Minapin village, directly accessible from the Karakoram Highway between Gilgit and Hunza.
Hire porters in Minapin if carrying overnight camping gear and food.

Carry sufficient water, as there are no fully reliable water sources on the upper trail.
Use trekking poles and good boots; the path can be slippery after rain.
