Khaplu
The ancient capital of Ghanche, Khaplu is a lush valley town in eastern Baltistan known for its 19th-century palace, apricot gardens, and proximity to K2 and Siachen.
Destination Overview
Introduction
Khaplu is the administrative capital of Ghanche District and one of the most historically and culturally significant towns in all of Baltistan. Situated along the banks of the Shyok River at an elevation of around 2,600 metres, the town is sheltered by towering peaks on all sides and surrounded by some of the most fertile land in the region. Its tree-lined streets, stone architecture, and unhurried pace of life make it one of the most charming destinations in northern Pakistan.
Khaplu Palace — A Living Heritage
The most iconic landmark in Khaplu is the Khaplu Palace, also known as Khapalu Fort or the Raja's Palace. Built in the early 19th century by the ruling Raja of Khaplu, the palace is a masterpiece of Balti-Tibetan architecture. Its multi-storey timber-and-stone construction, with intricately carved wooden balconies, latticed windows, and ornamental details, reflects a building tradition that has largely disappeared elsewhere. The palace was sensitively restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and now operates as the Khaplu Palace Hotel under Serena Hotels, offering guests the extraordinary experience of sleeping inside a centuries-old royal residence.
Chaqchan Mosque
A short walk from the palace stands the Chaqchan Mosque, believed to date to the 14th century and considered one of the oldest mosques in Pakistan. Built in a style that blends Central Asian and Tibetan influences, the mosque features a striking carved wooden interior and a quiet courtyard that has served the local community for generations. It remains an active place of worship and a deeply revered site in the town.
Orchards & Natural Surroundings
Khaplu's fertile valley floor is blanketed with apricot, cherry, mulberry, and walnut trees that erupt in blossom each spring and offer a canopy of shade in summer. The surrounding mountains channel cold glacial streams through the valley, irrigating terraced fields of wheat and barley. The combination of high-altitude clarity, green orchards, and dramatic rocky ridgelines creates a landscape of rare beauty that photographers and nature lovers find endlessly rewarding.
Gateway to Eastern Karakoram Adventures
Khaplu serves as the main base for explorers heading into the eastern Karakoram. From here, jeep tracks lead to the Hushe Valley — the gateway to Masherbrum (K1, 7,821m) and several other high peaks. The nearby Kondus and Saltoro valleys offer serious trekking and mountaineering routes. Khaplu is also the last major town before the road toward the Siachen Glacier region, making it a point of both strategic and adventurous significance.
Local Culture & Balti Hospitality
Khaplu has retained a strong sense of cultural identity. The local bazaar is a lively hub where traders sell dried fruits, Balti handicrafts, and freshly baked bread. Woodcarving is a respected local craft, and many older buildings in town feature original carved details that have been maintained over generations. Visitors are consistently struck by the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Khaplu community, which has a long tradition of welcoming travellers passing through the region.
