Hopper Glacier
One of the most accessible glaciers in the Karakoram — a dramatic river of ice in the Nagar Valley, reachable on a half-day walk from the Karakoram Highway.
Destination Overview
Hopper Glacier — also written Hoper Glacier — is one of the Karakoram’s most accessible and visually dramatic glaciers. Flowing down from the high basins above the Nagar Valley, it forms a broad river of crevassed ice, broken into towers, pinnacles, and seracs.
Classified as a surging glacier, Hopper periodically advances far faster than normal glaciers, churning up its surface into a chaotic landscape of ice blocks and deep meltwater channels. Even when it is not in an active surge phase, the lower glacier remains an impressive, constantly changing environment.
The approach runs through traditional Nagar villages, terraced fields, and old stone watchtowers, with the white pyramid of Diran Peak (7,266m) dominating the skyline. From Hopper village, a straightforward 2–3 hour walk over rocky moraine brings you to the glacier snout, making this one of the best options in northern Pakistan for travellers who want a close glacier experience without a multi-day expedition.
For visitors who have already explored Hunza, Attabad Lake, and Karimabad, Hopper Glacier offers a quieter, more off-the-beaten-track day or overnight trip while still being logistically simple from the Karakoram Highway.

Best Time to Visit
Overall Best Time
June to October is the ideal window to visit Hopper Glacier.
- Summer (June–September): Prime trekking season. The Nagar Valley road is usually clear, days are long and warm in the valley, and glacial meltwater streams are at their most active, adding drama to the ice scenery.
- Autumn (October): Cooler temperatures, fewer visitors, and clear air with beautiful light on the glacier and surrounding peaks. Meltwater decreases, which can make approaches across the moraine and near the snout a bit easier.
Access in winter and early spring can be restricted by snow and ice on the Nagar Valley road, and village facilities are more limited.
How to Reach
By Road
- From Gilgit, follow the Karakoram Highway (KKH) south for roughly 25 km to the Nagar Road junction.
- Turn east into the Nagar Valley and continue by jeep through Nagar town towards Hopper village.
- The full drive from Gilgit to Hopper takes around 1.5–2 hours in good conditions.
- A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended beyond Nagar town, as the road becomes steeper, narrower, and rougher.
From Hunza / Karimabad, drive south on the KKH to the same Nagar junction, then continue as above.
