Karimabad
The heart of Hunza Valley, Karimabad is a terraced hilltop town famous for Baltit Fort, sweeping Karakoram views, apricot blossoms, and rich Burusho culture.
Destination Overview
Introduction
Karimabad is the principal town of Hunza Valley and the cultural and commercial heart of the Hunza-Nagar District. Perched on a series of terraced hillsides at around 2,438 metres, the town looks out across one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas on Earth — a sweeping arc of Karakoram giants that includes Rakaposhi (7,788m), Ultar Sar (7,388m), and the needle-like spire of Lady Finger (6,000m). For most travellers visiting northern Pakistan, Karimabad is a destination they return to again and again.
Baltit Fort — The Icon of Hunza
Standing on a rocky shelf directly above the town, Baltit Fort is the most iconic structure in all of Hunza. Originally built around 700 years ago and expanded over subsequent centuries, the fort served as the residence of the Mirs (rulers) of Hunza until the mid-20th century. Its multi-storey timber and stone construction shows clear Central Asian and Tibetan architectural influences, with overhanging wooden galleries and carved wooden pillars that have been remarkably well preserved. The fort was comprehensively restored in the 1990s through a collaborative effort led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and is now open to visitors as a heritage museum, offering guided tours through royal chambers, armouries, and watchtowers with extraordinary views.
Altit Fort — Older and Quieter
Located about 4km below Karimabad in the village of Altit, Altit Fort is believed to be the oldest building still standing in the Hunza region, with parts of the structure estimated to be around 900 years old. Less visited than Baltit, Altit offers a more contemplative experience. The fort sits on a cliff edge above the Hunza River, and the restored village around it — known as Altit Heritage Village — provides a carefully maintained example of traditional Hunza domestic architecture, complete with a local women's craft cooperative.
The Apricot Blossom Season
Each spring, typically during the second and third weeks of April, the terraced slopes of Karimabad are transformed by the blossoming of thousands of apricot, cherry, and almond trees. The contrast of delicate white and pink blossoms against the snow-covered peaks behind the town creates a scene of extraordinary beauty and has made Hunza's blossom season one of the most celebrated events in Pakistani tourism. The timing varies slightly each year depending on the winter snowfall and spring temperatures.
Duikar — Eagle's Nest Viewpoint
A rough jeep track climbs above Karimabad to the village of Duikar, situated at around 2,900 metres and known colloquially as Eagle's Nest. The viewpoint here is one of the finest in the entire Karakoram, offering an unobstructed 180-degree panorama across the Hunza Valley and its surrounding mountains. Sunrise and sunset from Duikar, with the peaks turning gold and then deep crimson against a darkening sky, are experiences that visitors consistently describe as among the most beautiful of their lives.
Karimabad Bazaar & Local Crafts
The main bazaar of Karimabad is a lively strip of shops selling everything from locally produced dried apricots and apricot oil to embroidered caps, hand-woven woollen shawls, semi-precious stones sourced from the surrounding mountains, and traditional Hunza jewellery. The Burusho people of Hunza are known for their fine embroidery and distinctive needle-punched cap designs, and the bazaar is one of the best places in Pakistan to purchase authentic locally made handicrafts directly from artisans.
