Satpara Lake
A tranquil natural lake just minutes from Skardu city, surrounded by rugged brown hills and reflecting the peaks above — the perfect gentle introduction to Skardu's high-altitude scenery.
Destination Overview
Satpara Lake is Skardu’s closest natural attraction and one of its most quietly beautiful spots. Just 9 kilometres south of Skardu city, the lake sits at 2,636 metres in a bowl of brown desert hills, fed by glacial streams from the surrounding ranges. Its waters are remarkably clear and shift in colour through the day from deep green to vivid turquoise depending on the light.
The lake feeds the Satpara Dam, which provides hydroelectric power and water to Skardu, giving it strategic as well as scenic importance. For travellers, it offers a calm counterpoint to the drama of Deosai and the effort of K2 approaches: a place to sit, breathe, and simply look at water and mountains.
Trout are often visible from the shore, and boat rides are available from local operators, making for a pleasant 30-minute excursion on the water. The short drive from Skardu passes through a dramatic desert gorge before the landscape opens suddenly into the lake basin.
Satpara pairs naturally with a morning visit to Skardu’s Kharpocho Fort and an afternoon drive toward Deosai National Park, for which the same road is the primary access route.

How to Reach
By Road
From Skardu city, Satpara Lake lies about 9 km south via Satpara Road. The drive takes roughly 20–25 minutes along a narrow, winding road through a rocky desert gorge before opening out at the lake. Taxis and jeeps are easily arranged in Skardu; negotiate a return fare including waiting time (typically around PKR 1,500–2,500, depending on season and bargaining).
On Foot
Walking from Skardu is not recommended. The road is narrow, exposed, and not pedestrian-friendly, with traffic and little shade. A jeep or taxi is the safest and most practical option.
